The park
Only 18 km outside the town of Chania, on the feet of the White Mountains, the Botanical Park, a small continent where the flora and fauna of our island is abundant and is waiting to welcome you. When you arrive you will not believe that it is the same expanse which was burnt to the ground in the fires of 2003. Today reborn from its ashes due to the lands’ formation and the region’s microclimate its a paradise on earth for many plants and animals. In the middle of the colourful parks stands a burnt olive tree, a memorial and a reference to the 2003 fires which gave the idea to four brothers to create this magical place.
Entering the park, time stops, thoughts stop too. The rustle of the leaves and the song of the birds fire up the senses. Surrender yourself to the thousands of colours and scents of the plants. The tour in the gardens is a trip of all senses, where our soul communes with feelings which have been forgotten in the noise of the city.
Follow the 2,5 km natural path and discover numerous different plants, fruit-bearing trees, herbs, spices, medicinal and ornamental plants from all over the world. The lush landscape is completed by the lake which offers accommodation and protection to ducks, geese and other rare species of water birds. If you are lucky enough you might notice hawks flying in the area. There is no rush and you may wander around at your own pace, there are also various suitable rest points available to relax and enjoy the landscape under the tree shadow and observe animals in their natural habitat. Near the entrance is the park’s restaurant with panoramic view of the area, where you may taste traditional dishes cooked with local organic products and fresh products straight from the gardens of the park.
