General information
Balos
The renowned Balos lagoon, situated about 56km northwest of Chania and 17km northwest of Kissamos, rests between Cape Gramvousa and Cape Tigani, underneath the stunning Platiskinos mountains. Balos is celebrated for its breathtaking turquoise waters, unspoiled natural beauty, and picturesque exotic landscape. The warm and shallow sea is perfect for young children, while the sandy beaches exhibit a delightful pinkish hue due to crushed shells. Beyond the lagoon's rocky boundaries, the water becomes deeper and colder, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling. The lagoon and its surrounding area boast a rich variety of rare flora and fauna, all protected under the Natura 2000 program.
Gramvousa
Imeri Gramvousa Island, situated 2 miles northwest of the stunning Balos lagoon, is widely known for its historical Venetian fortress. This fascinating fortress still stands tall at a height of 137m above the beach, offering a glimpse into its intriguing past. Throughout history, this fort has served as a hideout for pirates, with rumors swirling about a hidden treasure buried on the island. Additionally, the abandoned wreck near the beach adds a unique charm to the picturesque landscape.
